Position Title: Cross-Country Ski Trail Groomer

Reports to: Trail Operations Manager

Term and Hours of Work: Seasonal Part-Time, October 14, 2023 to March 31, 2024

Various hours up to 30 hours per week including weekday and weekend shifts.

Compensation: $30.00 per hour

Organization:  BCTA is a place where the love of trails and the outdoors can be enjoyed by all, in every season.  Bragg Creek Trails Association (BCTA) builds and maintains a multi-user trail network for the enjoyment of all non-motorized trail users in the West Bragg Creek area of Kananaskis Country and the greater Bragg Creek Area.  BCT advocates for responsible trail use, community building, volunteerism and environmental stewardship amongst the outdoor recreation community. BCTA believes that fostering strategic partnerships and actively engaging with trail enthusiasts compliments the organizational strengths that support BCTA’s vision and goals.

Position:

Cross Country Ski Groomers are responsible for maintaining and grooming the Bragg Creek Trails network located in Kananaskis Country. This role involves operating grooming equipment, assessing trail conditions, and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of trail users. Ski Groomers must have a keen eye for detail and be able to identify areas of the trail that need special attention. They must also be able to make precise adjustments to the equipment to ensure that the snow is groomed to the appropriate depth and consistency. It is essential to have an understanding of cross-country skiing techniques and equipment. This role also involves working in all types of outdoor weather conditions, and can be physically demanding including heavy lifting, shoveling, and sweeping.  Working hours can include early morning, late nights and cold temperatures.

Job Responsibilities:

Trail Grooming

• Operate specialized snow grooming equipment, such as snowcats, snowmobiles, and tracked vehicles with groomer attachments, to groom cross-country ski trails.
• Maintain consistent track width, depth, and track-set quality to ensure a smooth and enjoyable skiing experience.
• Adjust grooming equipment based on snow conditions, terrain, and trail difficulty.

Trail Assessment

• Monitor and assess trail conditions regularly, considering factors like snow depth, quality, and weather conditions.
• Identify and address hazards, such as fallen trees, rocks, or icy patches, to ensure skier safety.
• Perform minor trail repairs and maintenance as needed.

Equipment Maintenance:

• Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of grooming equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Perform basic equipment repairs and coordinate with maintenance staff for more extensive repairs.

Communications and Customer Service:

• Must be able to work effectively as part of a team and be able to communicate effectively with other team members, coordinate their activities, and support each other to ensure that the job is done efficiently and effectively.
• Interact with cross-country skiers and provide information on trail conditions, grooming schedules, and safety guidelines.
• Respond to inquiries and address skier concerns or issues courteously and professionally.

Safety Compliance:

• Ski Groomers must have a strong safety consciousness and be able to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
• Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines, including wearing appropriate safety gear and ensuring equipment is in safe working condition.
• Promote safe skiing practices among trail users.

Environmental Stewardship:

• Follow environmentally responsible practices, including minimizing damage to natural habitats and ensuring the proper disposal of waste and materials.

Record Keeping:

• Maintain accurate records related to grooming schedules, trail conditions, and equipment maintenance.
• Assist in generating reports for management.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Previous experience in trail grooming or operating heavy equipment is preferred.
• Proficiency in operating grooming equipment and snowmobiles.
• Knowledge of cross-country skiing techniques and trail design principles.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Physical fitness and ability to work in various weather conditions.
• Basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
